I grew up in Brooklyn and found my way West to graduate school at the University of Arizona. There I was introduced to the Indians of the Southwest and their crafts. I’ve been intrigued ever since.
After moving to San Diego, I became involved with creating and selling crafts, and finally found my art-Natural Basketry – in Misti Washington’s class in the fall of 1976. There I learned the techniques used by basket weavers from Appalachia to the Southwest. In the summer of 1983, I studied with a Tohono O’odham (Papago) basket weaver, Frances Manuel, and now incorporate many of her techniques in my pine needle baskets.
Besides making and selling baskets, I’ve also taught classes privately and through the University of California at San Diego. In February 2010 I was involved with “Weaving a Dream”,the first basket cruise. I taught pine needle classes on this cruise to Nassau, St.Thomas, and St Martin,at the Georgia Basketry Association’s (GBA) annual convention, Discovering A New World Of Weaving, on February 2012, at the 2012 Stowe Basketry Festival June , 2012 at the Round Hearth in Stowe,Vermont and at Basket Artisans of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ Nov. 2012.
My baskets have been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the United States and Canada. Some baskets were recognized with ribbons and awards. In 2012 I exhibited my baskets at the San Diego International Airport Art Program in Terminal 2.In 2014-2015 I exhibited my baskets at the Ontario Airport (LA) in Terminal 2 and Terminal 4.
